Training and Exercise
|
Entles are very trainable provided that all members of the household are dedicated to fair and consistent enforcement of training. Due to their intelligence and strong will, they can prove to be a challenge for first time owners. Professional training from day one is strongly encouraged. The breed is surprisingly strong for its size. As a cattle dog, they have a high pain threshold which makes rough physical correction fairly ineffective. A positive reinforcement approach to training is highly successful with this breed. Early socialization with many people of all ages and other dogs of different breeds is extremely important. Despite their small stature, they are tough little dogs perfectly willing to prove so to any worthy opponent. |

Exercise!
"A tired dog is a good dog". It is important to keep in mind that this relatively small dog is indeed an excellent cattle herding dog. They are quick, tough, and very physical, known for hurling themselves at livestock. Entlebuchers need a sufficient amount of exercise, an hour a day of vigorous activity minimum. Due to the breed's intelligence, stimulating activities are necessary to keep a happy, manageable dog. Entlebuchers love having a job to do and are well suited to herding, agility, obedience, tracking and Frisbee™.
Training Help
The Training Committee, upon request, provides information to Entlebucher owners regarding socialization, training, and behavior modification. We recommend Training Classes begin at 10wks of age and include lots of socialization with other puppies and humans.
The Training Committee also recommends excellent resources in the form of books & videos, publications, and websites which can help you with training and undesirable behavior issues.
