American Kennel Club – A History
Over the past decade, NEMDA has been the guiding force in the protection of the Entlebucher breed. With the NEMDA Registry of due diligence we have maintained a respected stud book for the breed in North America and in Europe. As the breed has increased in popularity and our members have sought increased opportunities to show and perform with their dogs, NEMDA club members voted to be the Entlebucher Parent Breed Club with American Kennel Club, thereby starting the process of full American Kennel Club breed recognition.
The first step in this process was to turn the NEMDA Registry over to the Foundation Stock Service (FSS), the breed gateway into the AKC.
In June 2007 enough Entlebuchers were enrolled in the FSS enrollment service to allow the Entlebucher Mountain Dog to be granted participation privileges in all AKC Companion Sport Events plus NEMDA Petitioned for the ability to participate in our breed’s historic function of herding as a Performance event. Companion events include Obedience, Agility, Rally Obedience and Tracking.
NEMDA named AKC Parent Club effective January 1, 2009
In May 2008, the AKC named NEMDA as the AKC Parent Club to represent the Entlebucher Mountain Dog. The Entlebucher became eligible to compete in the AKC Miscellaneous Class effective January 1, 2009.
In the AKC May 2008 Chairman’s Report, Ronald H. Menaker (Chairman) is quoted; “One often hears the saying ‘form follows function. AKC Conformation events demonstrate form, while AKC Performance Events provide an opportunity for a breed to demonstrate their function. These two events, when taken together, enable breed supporters to maintain the true essence of the breed.”
